How We Select Investments

At Curtis Fidelity Bank, we are very selective about the types of investments we recommend. That's because we know you're working to achieve important milestones in your life – and we want to provide what we believe are appropriate investment choices for you.

We use a disciplined approach to select the stocks, bonds, and mutual funds we recommend. We strive to find those that align with our focus on quality investments, work well together in a diversified portfolio, and are compatible with our buy-and-hold philosophy. This gives you and your financial advisor a starting point for choosing investments depending on your goals, situation, and the amount of risk you're willing to take.

The process

With hundreds of thousands of investment options out there today, our Research department starts by narrowing down publicly traded stocks, bonds, and mutual funds using characteristics such as:

  • Track record
  • Debts and cash flow
  • Credit risk and other types of risk
  • People
  • Process
  • Geography

We filter down investment choices to only those that we think to make sense for our clients. This means you and your financial advisor can focus on which of those investments will work for you and your personal goals and risk tolerance.

How we choose stocks

At Curtis Fidelity Bank, we don't follow every company. Our approach is to filter stocks based on geography, track record, balance-sheet strength, and company size. We then narrow down the companies to those that we believe have sustainable competitive advantages, and we use valuation analysis to determine a fair price for the stock. This process allows us to recommend what we believe are quality companies with attractive prices.

How we choose bonds

Because we recommend you own individual fixed-income investments for preservation of principal and income, we give advice on a bond's "credit risk." That refers to the bond issuer's ability to pay principal and interest until the bond matures.

In fact, our fixed-income research analysts view credit risk as to the primary factor in evaluating individual bonds. We also consider other risks, including interest rate risk and reinvestment risk, while conducting high-quality, in-depth analysis on bonds. This timely, insightful information is at your financial advisor's fingertips to give you recommendations for your investment needs.

How we choose mutual funds

With thousands of mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to choose from, it can be overwhelming to figure out which ones to buy. That's where our Mutual Fund Research team comes in. They bring more than a century of collective investment experience to analyzing mutual funds and helping provide quality recommendations. Your financial advisor can use our mutual fund team's recommendations to provide mutual fund choices that are appropriate for you.
